During the 2018-19 school year, we will continue to build upon and refine our proven foundation of good work, honored traditions, and continued excellence in education. The vision of “kids first…high expectations…and continuous improvement,” remains central to our expectations.
We have some new members on our Unity Team this year. At Unity Elementary we have Emily Heemeyer (K), Kaci Beal (2nd grade), Brenda Shires (para), and Jason Turner (Custodian). At Unity Middle School we have Tyler McAllister (PE) and Crystal Heming (para). Unity High School added Grace Crowcroft (English), Brad Voth (Dr. Ed), Jodeen Campbell (Sign Language Interpreter para), and Kevin Scott (Custodian). In the MS/HS kitchen we have two new cooks, Rhonda Lightfoot and Mary Ohnemus. We have also brought on board two new bus drivers to transport our students, Kelley Hummel and Ed Butcher. Finally, to help with the social emotional needs of our students we have a part-time social worker/therapist, Gina Brunetti. We are very pleased to have these new (and some transferred) Unity Team members.
Registration went very well and we have seen an increase across the district. We saw an increase at the elementary by 14 students. In the spirit of “kids first,” another section of kindergarten was added due to the addition of 5 new kindergarten students. This additional section will be located next to our ECE classrooms in the Salem Lutheran Church basement. We are fortunate we have a space we can utilize for our students to help reduce class sizes at the lower levels. The middle school saw a slight increase of three students factoring in the move ins and move outs. At the high school we remained fairly consistent with the decrease of three students. The principals and guidance counselor have been busy balancing schedules and inputting students in PowerSchool. Thanks also to our wonderful secretarial staff for their help with registration!
A big thanks goes out to the maintenance and custodial staff including our student workers. As part of our “continuous improvement” efforts for our facilities they have painted the middle school gym, high school gym, high school classrooms and hallways. This is a continuation of the effort to paint all the schools. The elementary will be next in our goal of painting the entire district. A huge thank you goes out to the Friends of Unit 4 for their generous donation covering the cost of the paint! The maintenance/custodial crew have also waxed all the floors in the district. In addition, they have reinstalled MS lockers after being painted, done general cleaning, completed repairs, and moved smart boards, desks, and other items as requested. Their hard work is very much appreciated.
We look forward to a very positive and productive year together! We extend a special, yearlong invitation to our families to join us at school activities and events whenever possible. We want we and value your involvement and support in your child’s education! Your active participation is key to the success of your child during their school years.
Please know that we highly value home/school communication here at CUSD #4. It is vital and plays an integral role in each student’s success. We encourage you to contact us if/when the need arises, and to stay in the know about your child’s studies, assignments, assessments, and school activities, as well as other events and happenings.
Again, we welcome you to Unity and to our wonderful learning community. Our school is a place alive with much energy, enthusiasm, and a high standard of excellence! It is, indeed, a place where opportunities abound! Here’s to an AWESOME new school year as we work together to make our school a great place to work and learn each day!
